Project 1

Experiential Landscape

Landscape architecture is designated to integrate people with the outdoor environment in a way to
make people appreciate nature. It involves all aspects of the outdoor environment from the design of
intimate gardens to the planning and management of land areas. People use this space most of the
time; when they leave a building, they will have to pass by an open space to reach next destination.

Public open space is considered as a park that acts as a getaway for city residents to escape from the
hustle and bustle of city life. A park should provide a natural setting, or so called ‘pleasure gardens’.

“Place making is both an overarching idea and a hands-on tool for improving a neighborhood, city or
region. It has the potential to be one of the most transformative ideas of this century”.

[Project for Public Space]

In this project, students are required to form a group of six or seven members in total. My group members included Tham Kai Loon (group leader), Wong Yun Teng, Tan Vinnie, Issac Chew, Kiew Chee Yuan and me.

The topic of project will be given by lecturer and we are required to conduct a research of that particular topic. The topic are national park, community park, neighborhood park, urban park, city park, theme park, linear park, pocket park, state park and metropolitan park. The topic given to us are urban park.

Based on the chosen topic, we are required to select two case studies (one from local and one from international) and describe briefly the historical background, characteristics of the park, the contextual study and activities people commonly do. Additionally, we need to explain the landscape features and elements of the two sites. We also required to do comparison studies between parks in local and abroad in this project.

We had chosen Taiping Lake Garden as our local urban park and Lumpini Park which located at Thailand as our international park. We separated the subtopics and do research accordingly to the parks. After all information were collected, we send all of it to Yun Teng to produce the slideshow. After the slideshow was done, we did checked it together to avoid mistakes. Special thanks to Yun Teng who did the slideshow and editing the video to make it looks professional.

All of the members are required to participate in the verbal presentation. Marks shall be deducted to those who do not participate in the group included presentation. Our presentation date drop on 5th May 2015 at our class venue. We are required to present our works within 10 minutes only. After a few mock presentation among ourselves, we did our best in presenting our works within 10 minutes.

Based on the Taylor's Graduate Capabilities that were to be harnessed from this assignment, I managed to practice discipline specific knowledge, lifelong learning and communication skills

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

I have learnt to communicate better with my group mates throughout this project. We manage to produce a professional slideshow and video editing in the end of the project.

DISCIPLINE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE

I able to identify the types of recreational parks and their characteristics. I understood the categories of parks and I am able to identify the parks in real life in future.

LIFELONG LEARNING

I can identify and describe the characteristics of a park by conducting a research according to the topics given and also able to demonstrate understanding and explanation of landscape features and elements in a park.
